Located in southeast Mexico, on the Gulf of Mexico. Boasts excellent weather all year round, with two seasons, a dry season, and a rainy season, similar to Florida. In January temperatures typically range from the mid 60’s in the evening to the mid 80’s during the day and in April/May (the two hottest months of the year), from the low 80’s at night to the low 100’s during the day.
Chelem is a small Mexican village (known as a Comisario) and fishing port located 15 minutes West of Progreso. It is a strip of land that runs from Yucalpetén to Chuburná with the Gulf of Mexico on one side and an estuary on the other.
Throughout the town, you will find a variety of small restaurants owned by both locals and expats, several coffee shops, as well as taco stands and places that offer take-out only. There are some small stores around town, including a medical clinic with the added services of psychology, nutrition, physiotherapy, and nursing services, dentistry, laundry services, a pool store, fruit stands, etc…
The beaches here are quieter than the Caribbean locations with fewer people and the gulf breezes make this a popular area for kite surfing.
Yucatan is rich in history, languages, and traditions, with a mix of Mexican, Mayan, and Spanish cultures. Mérida is known as the Cultural Capital of the Yucatan and offers an amazing number of Mayan Ruins to experience including Chichen Itza (one of the seven wonders of the world), Dzibilchaltún (just a short 20-minute drive from Chelem), Uxmal, and Mayapan.
Expat communities are present in this area and locals are both friendly and helpful.
The crime rates here are the lowest in the country and CEO World magazine called Mérida the second safest city on the continent after Quebec City. Conde Nast Traveller magazine readers named Mérida the #4 Best City in the World in 2022.
Mérida’s International Airport which has been recently extensively renovated, is located 45 minutes from Chelem. In addition to all of the domestic airlines servicing both MX and International destinations, Mérida is also serviced by American Airlines from Dallas or Miami, United from Houston, Delta (via AeroMexico) out of Mexico City, and WestJet offering direct flights from major Canadian cities.
Healthcare facilities such as Hospital Faro del Mayab Grupo Christus Muguerza and Star Médica are very good, procedures are inexpensive when comparing costs to the US, and Doctors, Consultations, and Procedures are easy to access. The majority of doctors in these facilities speak English and the majority of expats feel that the quality of care is significantly better here versus stateside. In addition, Dental facilities in Mérida are also excellent, with many of the dentists having been trained in the US.
There is a lot to discover in the Yucatan, including “cenotes” which are underground limestone sinkholes with cool, (77-78F year round) freshwater popular for swimming, especially during the heat of the day.
Known as the  “White City” (Ciudad Blanca), Mérida (a 30-minute drive from Chelem) is a vibrant city with stunning architecture. The main avenue running through Mérida, Paseo de Montejo offers a variety of museums, restaurants, stores, monuments, and other tourist attractions.
Mérida’s new Gastronomic Corridor is located on Calle 47 in the Historic center of Mérida and boasts 15 original restaurants with 8 new establishments under construction. The corridor will also link to Gran Parque La Plancha which is a park full of walking trails, bike paths, children’s play areas, a skating rink, a Railroad museum, and restaurants.
Shopping is plentiful in Mérida where you will find Costco, Sam’s Club, Home Depot, Ace Hardware, and four shopping malls including The Harbor, Gallerias, La Isla, and Altabrisa, featuring both familiar US brands as well as popular MX branded stores. There are several casinos in Mérida.
All of the car manufacturers are represented in Mérida, including Mercedes Benz, Land Rover, Jaguar, Tesla, Cadillac, and Porsche as well as (Ford, Chevrolet, Hyundai, Kia, Jeep, etc) and several high-end luxury car dealers who offer access to Ferraris, Lamborghinis, Mercedes, etc… on the secondary market.
Local markets featuring organic foods, meats, cheeses, baked goods, juices, vegetables, handicrafts, and artisan items are prevalent in Chelem, Chuburna, Progreso, and Mérida.
A 10-minute drive from Chelem you will find the Yucalpetén Harbor – a large local fishing fleet, fish packing companies (exporting fish and octopus worldwide), a Navy base, and eight recreational boat marinas. The private boats you see in these marinas range from dinghies to 70-ft yachts. Several of these marinas offer maintenance, repair, and restoration services, sailing schools, and beach clubs, in addition to the sale of Hobie Cat, kayaks, windsurfers, etc….
If you don’t have a car, there are many tuk-tuks or combis (small vans that run from Chuburna to Chelem to Progreso), that make it easy to get around. Or of course, all of the major rental car agencies are available.
